Fall protection, 29 CFR 1926.501, has been OSHA's most frequently cited standard for more than a decade, and fall protection training, 1926.503, sits in the same top ten. That pairing tells the whole story: the equipment is on site, and the understanding of how to use it is not. This free, self-paced course works through Subpart M the way an inspector reads it — where fall protection is owed, which systems satisfy the duty, what each system has to be able to do, and the three things crews get wrong most often: the anchorage, the clearance below, and the rescue that has to exist before anyone leaves the ground. Every requirement is quoted with the paragraph of 29 CFR it comes from, so you can check it yourself.
What you will be able to do
- Name the trigger height that applies to your work and the standard it comes from
- Read 1926.501(b) and say which system the situation in front of you requires
- Check a guardrail, a net, a warning line and a personal fall arrest system against the criteria in 1926.502
- Judge an anchorage, calculate the fall clearance you need, and recognize a swing fall
- Inspect a harness, lanyard and self-retracting device, and know when to remove one from service
- Write down a rescue plan and a training record that would stand up to an inspection
