Fall protection, 29 CFR 1926.501, has been OSHA's most frequently cited standard for more than a decade, and fall protection training, 1926.503, sits in the same top ten. That pairing tells the whole story: the equipment is on site, and the understanding of how to use it is not. This free, self-paced course works through Subpart M the way an inspector reads it — where fall protection is owed, which systems satisfy the duty, what each system has to be able to do, and the three things crews get wrong most often: the anchorage, the clearance below, and the rescue that has to exist before anyone leaves the ground. Every requirement is quoted with the paragraph of 29 CFR it comes from, so you can check it yourself.

Only OSHA-authorized trainers can deliver OSHA Outreach Training and issue Department of Labor cards, and fall protection cards as such do not exist in federal OSHA at all — what exists is the written certification record your employer must keep under 1926.503(b) after training you.

No. 1926.503(a) requires the employer to provide a training program delivered by a competent person qualified in the subject, covering the fall hazards of your work area and the specific systems in use there. Much of that has to happen with the actual harness, anchor points and rescue plan you will use. Use this course to prepare and to review.

No. A competent person, defined in 1926.32(f), is someone capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures. Knowledge is part of that; the authorization comes from your employer, and the judgment comes from experience on the kind of work you supervise. This course covers the knowledge side.

It is written on the construction standards, 29 CFR 1926 Subpart M. Where the general industry rules — 1910.28 for the duty and 1910.140 for the equipment — set a different height or a different criterion, the chapter says so and gives both paragraph numbers. Chapter 1.2 compares them side by side.

It touches scaffolds (1926 Subpart L), ladders (Subpart X), steel erection (Subpart R), aerial lifts (1926.453) and cranes only where their fall protection rules differ from Subpart M — Chapter 4.3 handles those. It does not cover confined space entry, telecommunications towers, or the sector-specific rules for window cleaning and elevator work.
