Compressed Gas Cylinders

Hazards: Cylinder falls and the valve shears — the bottle becomes a projectile · Fire or explosion from mixing oxygen with fuel gas, oil or grease · Fuel gas leak in an enclosed or unventilated space · Struck-by or crush injury while moving or hoisting cylinders

Why it matters

A standard cylinder holds a couple of thousand psi behind a brass valve about the size of your fist. Knock one over without a cap and the valve can shear: the bottle takes off through block walls. That is why OSHA writes the handling rules down in detail — 1926.350(a)(1) through (a)(12) covers caps, hoisting, transport, upright storage and separation, and none of it is advisory. Oxygen makes it worse, not better: it does not burn, it makes everything else burn hard.

Key points

  • Cap on, valve closed, cylinder upright. (a)(1), (a)(8) and (a)(9). Caps go back on before a cylinder is moved, and the valve is closed when work is finished, when it is empty, and when it moves.
  • 20 feet, or a 5-foot barrier. Oxygen stays 20 ft from fuel gas, oil and grease, or behind a noncombustible barrier 5 ft high rated at least half an hour. Same rule in 1926 and 1910.
  • Never lift by the cap. Hoist in a cradle, slingboard or pallet — never magnets, never a choker sling. Use a cylinder truck or chain to keep them from tipping.
  • Not a roller, not a support, not a prop. (c)(1) says so in one line, full or empty. And (c)(3): no damaged or defective cylinder gets used.
  • Bottles stay out of confined spaces. (b)(4) is absolute for oxygen, acetylene and other fuel gas. Run the hose in; leave the cylinders outside in fresh air.
  • Crack it, then open slowly. Stand to one side of the outlet, never in front. Fuel gas valve: 1½ turns maximum, wrench left on the stem so anyone can shut it fast.
  • A leak ends the shift for that bottle. Stem leak that won't stop: out of service. Fuse plug leak: out of the work area, valve closed, supplier called, ignition sources away.

Do

  • Chain cylinders to a cart, rack or post — in use and in storage.
  • Keep the cap with the bottle and put it back on.
  • Blow out the valve away from your face before fitting a regulator.
  • Keep bottles clear of hot work, sparks and any electrode.

Don't

  • Roll, drag or drop a cylinder, or let two strike each other.
  • Touch oxygen fittings with oily gloves, rags or hands.
  • Store bottles in a locker, cupboard, stairwell or gangway.
  • Take a cylinder into a tank, vault or manhole.

Frequently asked questions

1926.350(a)(10) requires oxygen cylinders in storage to be separated from fuel-gas cylinders and from combustible materials, especially oil or grease, by a minimum distance of 20 feet, or by a noncombustible barrier at least 5 feet high with a fire-resistance rating of at least one-half hour. 1910.253(b)(4)(iii) says the same thing for general industry.

Yes. 1926.350(a)(1) states that valve protection caps shall be in place and secured, and (a)(6) requires regulators removed and caps put back on before cylinders are moved, unless the cylinders are firmly secured on a special carrier. The cap is what stops a fall from shearing the valve off a bottle holding thousands of psi.

No. 1926.350(a)(5) prohibits using valve protection caps for lifting cylinders from one vertical position to another. For hoisting, (a)(2) requires a cradle, slingboard or pallet — magnets and choker slings are prohibited.

For storage and transport, yes. 1926.350(a)(9) requires compressed gas cylinders to be secured in an upright position at all times except, if necessary, for short periods while being hoisted or carried, and (a)(4) requires them secured in a vertical position on a powered vehicle. Fuel gas cylinders in use must be placed with the valve end up under (b)(3).

No. 1926.350(b)(4) is absolute: cylinders containing oxygen or acetylene or other fuel gas shall not be taken into confined spaces. Leave the bottles outside and run the hose in.

1926.350(d)(2) says the fuel gas cylinder valve shall not be opened more than 1½ turns, and that where a special wrench is required it shall be left in position on the stem while the cylinder is in use, so the gas can be shut off quickly in an emergency. Open all valves slowly to protect the regulator.

Under 1926.350(d)(5), if a leak at the valve stem cannot be stopped by closing the valve and tightening the gland nut, the cylinder is taken out of service. Under (d)(6), a leak at a fuse plug or other safety device means the cylinder is removed from the work area, the valve closed, and the supplier notified. Post a warning and keep ignition sources away.

Oxygen does not burn, but it makes everything else burn far more easily, and oil or grease under oxygen pressure can ignite on its own. That is why 1926.350(a)(10) names oil and grease specifically alongside fuel gas in the 20-foot separation rule. Never handle oxygen fittings with oily gloves or rags.
