Hydration and Electrolytes

Why it matters

OSHA publishes a case from one of its own investigations: a 50-year-old delivery driver, six years on the job, worked the second day of a sudden late-May warm spell. He developed heat cramps, then heat exhaustion, and spent two days in hospital with acute kidney failure from dehydration. Experience did not protect him; hydration would have. OSHA's guidance is blunt: do not rely on feeling thirsty, because by then the body is already behind - and past two hours, water on its own stops being the answer, because sweat carries salt out and only replacing it prevents cramps.

  • Dark urine, aching muscles, weakness. OSHA lists those as signs of rhabdomyolysis, muscle breakdown after hard work in the heat. That is a doctor, not another bottle.
  • Confusion or slurred speech is 911. Those are heat stroke signs. Cool the worker right away, stay with them, and never leave anyone with heat symptoms alone.

  • Fill your bottle before the gate, and top it up every break.
  • Keep the cooler within sight of the work, and say something when it runs dry.
  • Bring electrolyte mix on days you will be out more than two hours.
  • Watch the newest person on the crew, and speak up early.

Don't

  • Wait until you are thirsty, or skip a break to finish a pour.
  • Rely on soda, energy drinks or coffee as your hydration plan.
  • Assume respirators and impermeable clothing change nothing - they raise the risk.
  • Send a cramping worker back to the task "to sweat it out."
