What each Gmb weighs

Bulk specific gravity is a ratio to water, and water weighs about 62.4 lb per cubic foot. Everything below is that one multiplication, run in both directions.

Density = Gmb × 62.4 lb/ft³ · tons per cubic yard = Gmb × 0.8424. The spread from end to end of this table is about 12%: on a 500-ton job, 60 tons. That is what you are betting when you use an average density instead of the Gmb on your own mix design.

Worked at Gmb 2.35 (146.6 lb/ft³) so the column has a number in it — scale it in proportion to your own Gmb: a mix at 2.45 is 4.3% heavier, one at 2.25 is 4.3% lighter. Every figure here is a compacted mat thickness.

Getting the number right

  • The Gmb is on paper you already have. Mix design submittal, and the plant's daily QC or QA reports. It is measured on compacted specimens or cores under AASHTO T 166 / ASTM D2726. If you do not have it yet, one email to the plant gets it.
  • Gmb converts volume to weight; Gmm does not. Gmm, the Rice value (AASHTO T 209 / ASTM D2041), is measured on loose mix with no air voids. It is the reference a compaction spec is written against — FHWA reports in-place density as a percent of theoretical maximum, and Caltrans has inspectors report cores the same way. That is why an acceptance spec reads “92% of Gmm” and never a number of pounds.
  • Enter the compacted thickness. Loose mix sits noticeably higher behind the paver than the mat it becomes. The thickness anyone measures — and the one the spec names — is the finished, rolled thickness.
  • Thickness is a design decision. This page turns a thickness into a quantity; it does not choose one. Traffic, subgrade, and on public work the specification, set the section.
  • Then round to the load. Hot mix is delivered by the truckload and cannot go back to the plant to wait overnight. Once you have the tonnage, ask the plant how it wants to break the last load — legal haul weights differ by state and by truck configuration, so there is no universal load size to assume here.
  • No density is hard-coded on this page. Not 145 lb/ft³, not anything else. The only place a figure could come from for free is a percentage-of-Gmm specification, which is not a weight, so the calculation is built on the value your job actually has.

The thickness is the compacted thickness of the finished mat. Loose mix behind the paver sits noticeably higher than the mat it becomes, and estimating on the loose depth is how a job runs short at the far end.

Specific gravity is a ratio to water, and water weighs about 62.4 lb/ft³. Gmb is the bulk specific gravity of the compacted mixture, measured under AASHTO T 166 / ASTM D2726 — the value that describes the material as it sits in the pavement, air voids included.

27 ft³ per cubic yard, 2,000 lb per short ton. A Gmb of 2.35 gives 146.6 lb/ft³ and 1.980 tons per cubic yard; the plausible range of dense-graded mixes, roughly Gmb 2.20 to 2.50, spans about 12% — which is the size of the error you accept by using an average found online.

Why the spec talks in percentages, not pounds

Gmm is the theoretical maximum specific gravity, measured on loose mix with no air voids at all (AASHTO T 209 / ASTM D2041). FHWA reports state results as a percent of theoretical maximum density and Caltrans has inspectors report core results the same way, which is why an acceptance spec reads "92% of Gmm" rather than a weight. Gmm is the reference for compaction; Gmb is the one that converts volume to weight.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply the area by the compacted thickness to get the volume, then multiply by the density of your mix. In one step: tons = area (ft²) × thickness (in) ÷ 12 × Gmb × 62.4 ÷ 2,000. A 100 by 24 ft driveway at 2 inches compacted, with a mix whose Gmb is 2.35, is 400 cubic feet at 146.6 lb/ft³, which is 29.3 tons before any waste allowance.

Because there is no honest single density for hot mix asphalt, and the one every other calculator hard-codes, 145 lb/ft³, is somebody's average. Bulk specific gravity is printed on your mix design submittal and on the daily QC reports, it is free, and it is exact for the material you are actually buying. Gmb × 62.4 is the density in lb/ft³, so entering it takes ten seconds and removes the biggest unknown in the estimate.

Gmm is the theoretical maximum specific gravity, the Rice value, measured on loose mix with no air voids. The compacted thickness, meaning the finished mat. Loose mix sits noticeably higher behind the paver than the pavement it becomes, so a 2-inch mat is not 2 inches of loose material. Estimating on the loose depth overstates the volume and, worse, a spec thickness measured after rolling is the only one anyone will check.

At a Gmb of 2.35 (146.6 lb/ft³), one ton covers about 164 square feet at 1 inch compacted, 82 at 2 inches, 55 at 3 inches and 41 at 4 inches. Scale it with your own Gmb: coverage in ft² per ton = 2,000 ÷ (Gmb × 62.4 × thickness in inches ÷ 12). The calculator shows this figure for whatever you enter.

Yes, a few percent. The mat is never exactly the nominal thickness, joints and hand work eat material, and asphalt is delivered in truckloads that do not divide neatly into your number. Add your allowance here, then talk to the plant about how the last load rounds — hot mix cannot be returned and sit overnight.
