A good toolbox talk is five minutes on one hazard the crew will meet before lunch. Below are 50 topics grouped by hazard family, each with the point worth making and the standard to have open if someone asks. Pick from the group that matches this week's work rather than working down the list in order.

Focus Four: falls, struck-by, caught-in, electrocution

The four leading causes of construction fatalities, and the four OSHA reserves the most class time for. If you only run twelve talks a year, half of them belong here.

How to run one so it lands

  • Pick the topic from today's schedule, not from a calendar written in January.
  • Five to ten minutes, one point. Bring the actual harness, the actual cord, the actual wheel.
  • Ask a question and wait. Silence for eight seconds is fine; the answer you get is the whole value of the talk.
  • Close the loop. Anything raised gets a name and a date beside it, and gets reported back next week.

Talks are also the natural companion of the daily plan: what the crew is doing, what can hurt them and what is in place to stop it. If you are not already writing one, the pre-task plan form takes a minute at the tailgate.

Bottom line

  • Fifty topics is a year of weekly talks with room to repeat the Focus Four whenever the work changes.
  • No federal rule sets the frequency; 1926.21(b)(2) sets the obligation to instruct, and the talk is how it gets delivered.
  • A talk is not the training a standard requires — fall protection, scaffolds, forklifts, respirators and lockout all need their own.
  • Document topic, date, presenter and attendees. A record without those four fields is not worth the paper.

Frequently asked questions

Five to ten minutes on one topic. A talk that runs twenty minutes and covers four subjects is a meeting, and crews stop listening. Pick the hazard that is actually on the schedule today, make one point, and get a question back from the crew.

Weekly is the norm on most US jobsites, daily on high-hazard work, and there is no federal OSHA rule setting the frequency. What OSHA does require in construction is that the employer instruct each employee in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)); talks are the usual way to deliver and document that.

Not for standards that require their own training. Fall protection (1926.503), scaffolds (1926.454), powered industrial trucks (1910.178(l)), respirators (1910.134), lockout/tagout (1910.147) and confined spaces each require specific training, often with a hands-on component and a record. A five-minute talk reinforces training; it does not replace it.

The topic, the date, who delivered it and who attended, with each attendee signing for themselves. California's IIPP rule spells out the same four fields for any training record — employee name or identifier, training dates, type of training and training providers — and requires them to be kept at least one year (T8 CCR 3203(b)(2)).

The foreman or the competent person who walked the area that morning, not the office. The best talks come from someone who can point at the actual scaffold, the actual cord, the actual trench being discussed.

Three sources, in order: what the crew is doing this week, what went wrong recently — a near miss, an inspection finding, an incident on another crew — and the season. Heat in July, ice and short daylight in January, dust and demolition when the interiors start.
